I had the unique opportunity to attend another home birth. When someone willingly allows me to be in the room during a birth, whether at home or in the hospital, it never ceases to amaze me. It is truly such an honor.
It is such an intimate, amazing, important moment in a family’s life and they allow ME to be there. The first time I did a birth session, when I went to edit the pictures, it took me FOREVER. I couldn’t get through them. I kept crying. Not because I’m the best photographer ever but because the moment is so beautiful!

I am officially addicted.

Chris and Lisa allowed me attend their second child’s birth to take pictures, so it was an honor to be at their third child’s birth. (I hope they have MANY more!) 🙂

I got the call on Monday morning that it was time.
I usually recommend calling me in when mom is about 7-8 cms dilated.

I raced to their house and arrived about 45 minutes after the call. I really wanted a police escort. I needed to get to this birth! I ran up to the door, knocked a couple times, then decided to run in and what do I hear?

I literally missed the birth by a minute.

Little baby girl FLEW out. She was ready!

But alas, there was still plenty of pictures to take.

This was Lisa’s first water birth. I thought that was so cool!DSC_4373PINIMAGE

This next picture was taken pretty much right after she got out of the water. I looked scary after my kids were born. For days. • Kirsten P - These photos are amazing! My absolute favorite is the last color photo(the third from the end). The baby’s face so pretty, so peaceful and her hands so expressive. The daddy gazing at his new daughter. The mother smiling at her husband, the daddy. The delicate lacy yellow of the blanket and the purple of the mother’s gown. The baby holding onto her mom’s finger. It’s exquisite, Erica.

  • Adrienne - Ahhh!!! I LOVE the ones of Chris holding her- it shows how tiny she really is! And I LOVE LOVE the ones of the three of them in bed, especially the one with Lisa looking at Chris! Fabulous!! I wish you could’ve been at mine! You definitely wouldn’t have made it! 😉 Can’t wait to see more of future births!

  • Breann Montalbano - Hi there, just become aware of your weblog thru Google, and found that it’s really informative. I am gonna be careful for brussels. I will be grateful if you proceed this in future. Many other people can be benefited out of your writing

I have been thinking long and hard about how I can intentionally make this year better than last year.

Why not start with resolutions?

I’ve made tons of them in the past… hmmmm I wonder if any of them were ever accomplished…

As I kept pondering and contemplating what I could do, I realized the problem right then and there.

I can’t. I try. I pretend I can.

I like to make you all think I can… in photography, as a mom, as a wife, as a teacher.

It’s no fun when everyone knows you aren’t perfect.

I’m sure you KNOW but I sure am not gonna SHOW you on purpose!

For example, this whole Before and After business has been bugging me for days.

I WANT to show you a before and after but I’m scared!

Do you know why?

It’s SO silly.

I’m scared that you’ll see the real picture and then think I’m really not that great of a photographer.

I can just fix up any old picture in photoshop and voilà!

I know it’s not that simple but I want everyone to think that beautiful picture just came that way. Because I’m that

awesome. But, alas, I am not. And I figured this year, I’m just going to be me.

This way you get to see REAL and when I succeed, God gets the glory because you will have seen the messy.

I’m not going to hide something because I’m afraid of what people think.

People pleasing is out. Vulnerable is in.

What are you changing this year?

Next up: The best of 2012. Stay tuned.

  • Leah - I like the before and afters. And trust me, I’m still in awe of what you do. I am hopeless when it comes to snapping a good pic and even worse when it comes to Photoshop!

    Love all you said here!

  • Carolyn Smith - You are a godly, amazingly creative young woman. I am proud of you for sharing your heart with us. I also love the before and afters. Keep going my friend!

  • Kate - Gorgeous photos, both before AND after. Here’s a question though. Can you share what photo programs you use to get those gorgeous crisp bright ‘after’ photos? Do you use Photoshop with add-on actions? Or do you use Lightroom? I can never get my photos clear and bright like that. So beautiful.

  • erica - Kate, thank you so much! I use Photoshop (CS5) pretty exclusively for my editing. I do have some plug-ins for when I want to “play” (I love Alex Beadon’s actions). However for those specific photos and most of my typical editing I pull up the lighting on the curves to adjust for their skin tones and then all I do is add another layer and make an S curve. If you are unsure of what I am talking about feel free to email me.

I have been so inspired by the beauty of words lately.

It got me thinking… I should combine 2 of my favorite things together.

Words and Pictures.

If there ever was a woman to be admired it would be Mother Teresa.

I love this quote by her. PINIMAGE

And of course, my little model, doesn’t she remind you of someone?

Which American Girl Doll?
Samantha or Molly?

I had Samantha as a little girl so naturally she’s my favorite.

Her bangs remind me more of Molly though.

Either way she is THE sweetest.
Just as sweet in real life too.

My not-so-little girl had a birthday last week.

She knows that I take people’s pictures ALL the time!

So, she wanted to know when I was going to take hers for her birthday.

It made me wonder am I getting to busy that I don’t even take pictures of my kids anymore?
They are the reason I started my business.
I got all my practice by shooting them!

But apparently I haven’t done that in a while.

I made up for it though and she loved it!

She is just so pretty.
I know I’m biased but seriously…

Chic Critique is doing another FUN contest!

It’s called Photography Idol.

It sounds so fun!!

Check it out here.
