I love having snowy shots. The problem is that I can’t MAKE it snow.

I have found myself camera-less while it dreamily snows and the perfect shots pass me by.

This weekend I was doing a styled session with Ella louvi.

I knew that I wanted to incorporate snow somehow.

Of course, it snowed the day BEFORE the session.

The day of the session it was freezing.

No snow. Just freezing, cold, icy, and windy.

It was absolutely miserable outside.

So, it was time to improvise.

I bought potato flakes.

I was actually pretty skeptical about the flakes working but it was worth a try.

It turned out way better than I expected!
What do you think?

Does it look fake to you?

  • JoAnna - Oh fun! I may need to try this! I don’t think it looks fake at all. Gorgeous shot!

  • Marie A Bohn - oh wow who would have thought of all things potato flakes, brilliant!!! You would never know the difference.

  • Adrienne - Looks awesome! I wonder if real snow wouldn’t actually blow so beautifully? lol I love how it piled on her boots too!

  • Amber Kargus - I saw this picture when you posted it earlier and totally thought you must have had fresh snow. I was missing snow just seeing the picture, knowing from my parents it had been snowing at some point in the last month. Totally believable!!

  • erica - We did have fresh snow. It snowed the day before but it was too MISERABLE to go outside. And I wonder if the snow would have been so pretty. I don’t know that it would have blown like that. It would have been chunky or something… I don’t know. Now I know I can cheat. Haha. ๐Ÿ™‚

  • erica - Totally! I don’t think it would have blown so easily! It really did work SO SO perfectly. I’m going to go buy stock in potato flakes. Ew. ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Gretchen - Oh my goodness – this worked perfectly! I love it!

  • Kara - this is AWESOME!!! i’ve heard rumors of people using instant potatoes in place of the real stuff – i would have never guessed that is what this is unless you told!! FABULOUS!!

  • The Accidental Mama - It looks super amazing! It probably depends on all the lighting etc. but this looks fab! Thankfully, up here in Canada, we never have to worry about using the fake stuff ๐Ÿ™

  • Stephanie Cox - So beautiful! It doesn't look fake at all. I think it looks great and so believable.

  • Kelvin Shayne - It truly is mostly close to impossible to encounter well-educated people on this issue, however , you seem like you understand those things you’re indicating! Appreciation

  • Cathie carnahan - i was wondering if you would share your camera setting and lighting set up? I would love to attempt to recreate this shot, but my skills are rusty

Meet Emily, a soon-to-be Glenbrook South High School graduate!

She is a virtuoso on the piano and I wanted to capture that for her pictures.

The blue dress was perfect against the black piano. I love natural lighting indoors, it creates the perfect glow and makes it easier to darken everything else in the backdrop.

Time to hit the great outdoors!

The sun. I stare at it. During the golden hour of course. I follow it. I search for it. I dream about it. Lately, my new obsession is starting to be the post-processing aspect of my work. Maybe I like it because it’s for me. When I take a client’s picture I have to make sure I’m taking pictures for them. Pictures THEY will like. When I get a chance to pictures FOR me, it’s a whole new game. It’s freeing. I can go crazy. And sometimes the pictures turn out crazy. But it doesn’t matter. They are for me. I don’t have to make anyone else like them and I love that.

This picture I really like because it looks like she is peaceful in the forest. I don’t like forests. Especially dark forests. But in this picture, she is not afraid.

Peaceful. Graceful. Beautiful.PINIMAGE

It seems ironic that I am posting this beautiful summer evening session that I did not so long ago and today it is SNOWING! I really enjoy having sessions in the Glen at Gallery Park. It’s the perfect location. There are bridges, piers, parks, a pond, and a fountain. The geese however… Anyway, I have been photographing this family since the boys were born. I can’t believe how fast time flies!

I saw that there was a contest going on and the theme was “Shadows.” I knew I wanted to submit this last picture. Little did I know it would be picked as the winner by Tamara Lackey! That made it extra fun because I have been following her for a long time as a fellow photog.
